Die Duelle mit den Gegnern laufen stets gleich ab, sie schießen in festen Abständen selbst dann, wenn sich Quaid sicher in Deckung befindet. Anders als in Rage wird Schüssen nicht ausgewichen, sondern geduckt oder Deckung gesucht. Das funktioniert sogar in Mission 3 auf der Brücke - die Gegner haben freie Schußbahn, verfehlen aber den auf der Brücke hockenden Helden.
Dieser hat dafür ganz andere Probleme - die Munition beispielsweise. Zwar ist er mit gleich zwei Waffen unterwegs, aber Munition ist nicht so großzügig verteilt, dass nicht die Gefahr bestünde, dass er ganz ohne dasteht. Es gibt wohl nicht frustrierenderes in einem Ego-Shooter, als ohne Munition dazustehen - und mit dem "Ego" alleine kann man eben keinen Gegner umbringen. Als On-Rails-Shooter lässt Total Recall dem Spieler aber gar nicht die Wahl, einen Gegner nicht zu erschießen.
Es ist nicht möglich, sich im Shop mit Munition einzudecken, dort gibt es nur Health-Packs, weitere Waffen und schutzsichere Westen. Viele der Waffen und Rüstungen gibt es nur gegen die Prämium-Währung Goldbarren. Es kommt auch vor, dass für eine Mission eine Waffe empfohlen wird, die es nur gegen Goldbarren gibt.
Total Recall ist ein streng geskripteter On-Rails-Shooter, der mit einfallslosem Level- und Gegnerdesign langweilt. Dies mag der Sommer der Hollywood-Blockbuster sein, der gelungener Filmumsetzungen ist es jedenfalls nicht.
